Art for the people? Socialist Realism - Dec 5th

New Tretyakov Gallery

Sunday Dec 5th, 11.30 am

Socialist realism - the only officially sanctioned style in the USSR - used to be scorned in the West and viewed as a mediocre, boring art of the Communist Party. However, since the 2010ss this legacy has been reassessed, and now these are ones of the most hunted for in the market.

A lot of variety was discovered within the supposedly monolithic style. And, surprisingly, despite the claims for "realism" it was never really realistic, but depicted reality as it should be.

During the tour in the New Tretyakov Gallery we will see how Socialist Realism developed, established, and faded.
